The Squad scores on non-exhausts emissions (NEEs)
What are non-exhaust emissions (NEEs)? In a nutshell, they are particulate matter created from brake, tyre and road wear. And while automotive emissions levels may be lowering, NEEs are becoming the leading source of emissions from road transport in large European cities.
A recent report by EIT Urban Mobility, in collaboration with Transport for London (TfL) and the Greater London Authority (GLA) and conducted by e:misia, about particulate matter released by road transport in urban zones, states that “Battery electric vehicles brake wear emissions are 83% lower than for combustion engine vehicles, but lead to an increase in tyre wear of ca. 20% due to higher weight.”
We investigated further and made a chart that shows how micro cars compare to heavier vehicles. Unsurprisingly, you see how Squad's category, micro cars, is leading the way with almost 4x less NEEs.
The Squad has zero “tailpipe” emissions, up to 20% emissions in production (relative to weight), and 25% non-exhaust emissions, compared to large SUVs. As for secondary electricity emissions such as those from charging, for example, they can be up to 75% less than those from a regular car.
So, while the Squad also emits NEEs, the amount is approximately 4x lower. Using a Squad instead of a larger electric vehicle in many applicable cases leads to a positive environmental impact. We all want to breathe higher quality air in our cities. And the Squad supporting improvement of air quality worldwide is clearly part of the solution.
